How much subsidy do I get under PM Surya Ghar?
For residential rooftop solar, the central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW — a maximum of ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more. In special-category states and UTs (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, the North-East including Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep) the rates are ₹33,000 and ₹19,800, a maximum of ₹85,800. The scheme period runs to 31 March 2027.
How is the payback period calculated?
The calculator takes what you pay after the subsidy, then adds up the bill you avoid each year: solar units that replace units you would otherwise buy, times your electricity rate, rising by the yearly increase you set, less upkeep, with panel output declining slightly each year. Payback is when the running total turns positive.
How many units does a rooftop system generate?
MNRE material says a 3 kW rooftop system is expected to generate more than 300 units a month on average, which is about 1,200 units per kW per year — the pre-filled figure. Actual output depends on your location, shading, tilt and cleaning; use your installer's estimate for your roof.
What system size should I choose?
The calculator suggests a size that covers your yearly consumption at the generation figure you set, rounded up to the next half kW. The subsidy stops growing after 3 kW, so larger systems are only partly subsidised.
What about net metering and surplus units?
Net-metering and surplus-unit payment rules differ by state and DISCOM, so surplus units are valued at ₹0 unless you enter a rate. Some states also add their own top-up subsidy, which this calculator does not include.
Where does the electricity rate come from?
It is pre-filled from the Central Electricity Authority's state-wise domestic "effective rate" (edition as on 31 March 2026), worked out from your state regulator's tariff order for your monthly consumption: fixed and energy charges plus electricity duty. It leaves out state subsidies, fuel-cost surcharges and meter rent, and solar mainly saves the energy part of your bill, so replace it with the rate on your own bill if you can.
