Is an electric car cheaper than petrol or diesel in India?
Per kilometre, charging at home is usually far cheaper than petrol or diesel. But electric cars cost more to buy, so the total over your ownership period depends on how far you drive, your electricity rate, resale value and the price gap. This calculator shows the full cost of each option and when the EV pays back.
Is there a government subsidy on electric cars?
Not from the central government's PM E-DRIVE scheme, which covers two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-ambulances, e-trucks and e-buses but not private electric cars. Some states offer their own incentives or road-tax and registration concessions; enter whatever applies in the subsidy and on-road cost fields.
What GST applies to cars now?
Since 22 September 2025, electric vehicles attract 5% GST. Small petrol, CNG and LPG cars (up to 1200cc and 4 metres) and small diesel cars (up to 1500cc and 4 metres) attract 18%; larger cars and SUVs attract 40% with no compensation cess. Ex-showroom prices already include GST.
Where does the electricity rate come from?
It is pre-filled from the Central Electricity Authority's state-wise domestic "effective rate" (edition as on 31 March 2026): fixed and energy charges from your state regulator's tariff order, worked out for a household using a given number of units a month, plus electricity duty. Pick your utility or area and your household's monthly use (including the EV charging). It leaves out state subsidies, fuel-cost surcharges and meter rent, so if your own bill shows a different rate per unit, type it in.
Where does the CNG price come from?
CNG is priced by city and gas company and revised often, and there is no official all-India table. PPAC's monthly snapshot publishes the Delhi (IGL) and Mumbai (MGL) prices — ₹86.98 and ₹89.00 per kg as of 13 October 2026 — and the calculator pre-fills those for Delhi and Maharashtra. For any other city, enter today's price at your local station; CNG joins the comparison once you do.
Which petrol and diesel prices are used?
Pre-filled from PPAC's published table of retail prices at each state and UT capital (data from IOCL, 1 July 2026). Edit them to match your city.
