💡 PPP Equivalent and Actual Currency Conversion answer different questions. PPP tells you how far your money really goes in local terms; the market rate tells you what a bank would actually hand you. They're usually very different — that gap is the whole point of a PPP calculator.
Data Sources
PPP conversion factors — World Bank International Comparison Program, indicator PA.NUS.PPP ("PPP conversion factor, GDP, LCU per international $"), published under the World Bank's open-data terms (CC BY-4.0). 203 countries with a published value — the table above shows the top 25 by nominal GDP to keep it readable; search any of the other 178 in the From/To boxes above. Each row shows its specific data year (mostly 2025, some as old as 2011 where the World Bank hasn't published a more recent figure). Zimbabwe and Venezuela are excluded — both had only pre-redenomination data on file, incompatible with their current currencies.
Live market exchange rates — Frankfurter.app, an open-source rate API built on the European Central Bank's public daily reference rates. Covers roughly 30 major currencies; fetched fresh in your browser each time you load this page, not a stored snapshot.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is purchasing power parity (PPP)?
PPP is a way of comparing money across countries based on what it can actually buy locally, rather than the market exchange rate. A market exchange rate tells you what a bank will convert your money into; PPP tells you how far that money really goes in terms of goods and services.
Why is the PPP-adjusted amount so different from the exchange rate?
Prices for the same basket of goods and services differ a lot between countries — a haircut, a meal out or a bus ride typically costs far less in India than in the US or UK. PPP conversion factors account for this, so ₹1 in India often 'buys more' in real terms than a simple currency conversion would suggest.
Where does this calculator's data come from?
PPP conversion factors are from the World Bank's International Comparison Program (indicator PA.NUS.PPP), an open dataset (CC BY-4.0) covering 203 countries, each using its latest available year — mostly 2025. The live market exchange rate shown alongside it comes from Frankfurter.app, built on the European Central Bank's public reference rates.
Is this the same as a currency exchange rate calculator?
Not exactly — the two numbers answer different questions. The PPP-equivalent amount tells you how much local purchasing power is equivalent; the live market rate (shown alongside it, where available) tells you what a bank or forex service would actually convert your money into today.
